Ultimate Mexico Packing List: 29 Things You Need On Vacation
Mexico is a vibrant and culturally rich country that offers a diverse range of experiences to travelers. From its stunning beaches to its ancient ruins and lively cities, Mexico is a must-visit destination for any avid traveler. However, packing for a vacation can be stressful, especially if you’re not sure what to bring. To help you prepare for your trip to Mexico, we’ve put together a list of 20 items that you should consider bringing with you. Plus we’ve included a free printable PDF for your Mexico Packing List.
- Reef Safe Sunscreen: Mexico’s sunny weather is perfect for outdoor activities, but it’s also important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. The sun is very strong in Mexico so be sure to bring a high SPF sunscreen with you to keep your skin protected. You’ll want to avoid buying sunscreen at the resort. Recently I had to do this and one bottle of Hawaiian Tropics was $54 USD.
- Pesos: It’s very important to go to the bank and get Pesos before going to Mexico. At the airport, you will pay a much higher exchange fee. Most places in Mexico will not accept USD and it’s not recommended to use your credit cards in Mexico unless on the resorts.
- Flip-flops or sandals: Lightweight and comfortable footwear is essential for exploring Mexico’s beaches and towns.
- Light jacket or sweater: Even though Mexico is known for its warm weather, it can get chilly at night or in air-conditioned buildings. A light jacket or sweater is always a good idea.
- Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright Mexican sun with a stylish pair of sunglasses.
- Hat or cap: A wide-brimmed hat or cap can provide extra protection from the sun and keep you cool in the heat. This is a must-have for your Mexico packing list.
- Beach Cover-Ups: At some point in the day, I find myself in my bathing suit and beach cover-up in Mexico. So having a few is okay. I like to pack casual comfy coverups and a few that could go from beach to restaurant. Having beach a cover-up is also needed when your skin needs a reprieve from the sun. For my favorites read 25 Stylish Beach Cover Ups.
- Bathing Suits: I typically wear a bathing suit every day when I am in Mexico. I do not believe there is such a thing as packing too many bathing suits. I ensure I always have 3 types of swimwear: a tube top bathing suit solely for tanning and swimming in calm waters, a bathing suit with secure bottoms and a secure top for the days you are swimming in the waves or water sports, and a few one-pieces for the days or nights after dinner where I am feeling a little bloated but want to enjoy a soak in the hot tub.
- Athletic Clothes: I always pack athletic clothes in case I’m motivated to hit the gym on vacation or if we are planning for a hike.
- Tennis Shoes: Tennis shoes are not only great through the airport, but you’ll want comfy supportive shoes if you go hiking or sightseeing.
- Sundress: If you’re going to the market or exploring town a breezy lightweight sundress is a great item to have on your Mexico packing list.
- Shorts: Shorts are a great casual daytime item.
- Tank Tops: Tank tops pair well with any pair of jean shorts for a casual day outfit.
- Pair of Heels: There is nightlife in Mexico, now even if you’re not going out. Most people dress up for dinner. So I would pack a pair of heels that can go with everything.
- Dinner Attire: You’ll want to pack a few nice dresses or skirts and tops for dinner. If you are staying at a resort most people dress up for dinner every night. Or if you’re going to a show or club you’ll want nicer outfits for that.
- Light Weight Pajamas: It stays pretty warm in Mexico even at night so lightweight pajamas are all you need.
- Undergarments: Don’t forget any undergarments you need!
- Toiletries: Whatever I use at home on a daily basis is typically what I bring with me on vacation.
- Beach Bag: I always throw an empty beach bag in my suitcase or use one as a carry on that way for beach days I have a bag for my phone, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.
- Quick Dry Towel: If you’re staying at a resort they will supply beach towels however if you’re doing any water activities or visiting cenotes you’ll want to pack a quick dry towel.
- Camera: Mexico’s colorful streets and stunning landscapes provide countless photo opportunities. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
- Waterproof Phone Case: Waterproof phone case is so fun for getting some underwater photos!
- Power adapter: Mexico’s electrical outlets are different from those in North America, so be sure to bring a power adapter if you plan on using electronic devices.
- Portable charger: Keep your phone or other devices charged on the go with a portable charger. Don’t leave for the airport without crossing this off your Mexico packing list.
- Medications: If you take prescription medications, be sure to bring enough for your trip, along with any necessary documentation. Also, I would recommend packing stomach Meds. The tap water in Mexico will make you sick if you drink it so be careful and only drink filtered water. Also, if you are doing any boat tours or visiting nearby islands I would pack motion sickness pills.
- Travel insurance: Protect yourself against unforeseen events with travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, and other travel-related issues.
- Passport and copies: Don’t forget your passport, along with copies of important documents such as your itinerary, travel insurance policy, and emergency contact information.
- Language guide or app: While many people in Mexico speak English, it’s always a good idea to learn some basic Spanish phrases to help you communicate with locals.
- Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential in Mexico’s warm weather. Bring a reusable water bottle to fill up and carry with you throughout the day.
Best Time to Travel to Mexico
Mexico is a country that offers an abundance of attractions, from its beautiful beaches to its fascinating history and culture. While it is a year-round destination, the best time to visit Mexico depends on your preferences and the region you plan to visit. Here are some tips on when to travel to Mexico based on climate, crowds, and festivals:
High Season (December to April):
This is the peak tourist season in Mexico, especially in the coastal areas. The weather is mild and dry, with temperatures ranging from the low 70s to the mid-80s°F (21-30°C). However, expect higher prices for flights, accommodation, and activities during this period, as well as larger crowds.
Shoulder Season (May to June and November):
This is a good time to visit Mexico if you want to avoid the crowds and still enjoy pleasant weather. The temperatures are still warm, but not as hot as in the summer months. Prices may be lower during this season, and you’ll have more flexibility in terms of availability for flights and accommodations.
Low Season (July to October):
This is the rainy season in Mexico, with occasional hurricanes in some coastal areas. However, the rain usually falls in the late afternoon or evening, leaving the mornings and early afternoons sunny and warm. The prices are lower during this season, but some attractions may be closed, and outdoor activities may be limited due to the weather.
Festivals and Events:
Mexico is famous for its colorful festivals and events throughout the year. If you want to experience some of these celebrations, plan your trip accordingly. For example, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated in late October and early November, while Mexican Independence Day is on September 16th. The Carnival in Mazatlan and the Guadalajara International Book Fair are also popular events worth considering.
Regional Variations:
Mexico is a large country with varying climates and weather patterns. For example, the Yucatan Peninsula and Baja California have a tropical climate, with hot and humid summers and mild winters, while the highlands in central Mexico have a temperate climate with cool nights year-round. Consider the regional variations when planning your trip to Mexico, as they can have a significant impact on your experience.
