Visit One of the Four Green Sand Beaches in The World
This post is all about Green Sand Beach – Hawaii, Big Island
Green Sand Beach, also known as Papakōlea Beach, or Mahana Beach is a unique and breathtaking beach located on the southern coast of the island of Hawaii. And, if you are wondering how many green sand beaches are there in the world? There are only 4. So, if you are in Hawaii up for a road trip, hiking, and breathe taking views this should be a must-do on your list! Plus I’ll cover the best stops along the way.
One of the most unusual features of Green Sand Beach is its remote location. The beach is only accessible by foot, however, there are locals who wait in the parking lot and will let you hop in the bed of their truck for about $20 and drive you back. However, I recommend hiking!
If you opt for hiking it’s important to load up on sunscreen and bring plenty of water since the hike is in direct sunlight. However, since you are elevated and so close to the ocean even on a hot day your hike will be cooler and you’ll have a nice breeze, so don’t let temperatures deter you. The trek to the beach is just shy of three miles in total there and back it’s 5.5 miles. Just regular tennis shoes are fine for this hike, it is not too strenuous. However, I do recommend wearing tennis shoes you can throw in the wash or don’t mind getting dirty. The sand at the beach may be green, however, the sand during your hike is a burnt orange color and will leave a dusting over your shoes. The effort for this hike is well worth it, as the view is beautiful!
What To Expect at Green Sand Beach
The beach itself is secluded and peaceful, with a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. The green sand adds a unique contrast to the blue waters, making it a great spot for photography. It’s also a great place to swim. However, do not swim too far out! Due to the fact that the current can be strong and the waves can get big, it is easy to get stuck in the current! There are legends of people getting swept out to sea and never returning. Since this is the southernmost part of the United States you would not come across the land for another 2,500 miles. Always be respectful of the ocean and aware of your own strengths.
Why is The Sand Green
If you are wondering why is the sand green in Hawaii? It is because the sand is formed from the erosion of the surrounding volcanic cinder cone, named Puu Mahana, which is made of olivine. This mineral can be found in Hawaii’s volcanic rocks. When the volcanic cinder cone erodes, it breaks down the olivine and erodes the grains of sand that make up the beach.
Green Sand Beach is a unique and beautiful destination that is well worth a visit. The journey there is an adventure in itself, and the stunning natural beauty of the beach will make it all worthwhile! It’s definitely one of the must-see places on the island of Hawaii that is off the beaten path.
Please be aware that the beach is also considered sacred ground for some of the native Hawaiian population and to take care of the beach and respect their culture.
How To Get To Green Sand Beach, Hawaii
If you are coming from Kona it’s about a 1.5-hour drive. You will take Highway 11 and venture through Kealakekua, Captain Cook, Honaunau, and Ocean Views. You’ll get to a point where you’ll see a storefront that has a big sign this is the last stop! So make sure you get gas, water, snacks, and food in your belly at that point if you haven’t already.
The trailhead is off Highway 11 between the 69 and 70-mile markers, look for South Point Road. Turn down South Point road and drive it for about 8 miles, stay left and you’ll see a sign indicating Green Sand Beach. Parts of the road are one-way so you will want to drive slowly. After a few minutes, you will run into a large parking lot area. There are porta-potties in the parking lot. Green Sand beach is a natural beauty but there will be no amenities when you get there.
Green Sand Beach Trail Head
From the parking lot to begin the hike you will walk south on a paved road that turns to dirt. If you’re heading toward the ocean you are going in the right direction. As soon as you come across a concrete boat launch, turn and hike east along the dirt road. Soon thereafter you will see a maze of parallel dirt roads in this area. Just stay close to the ocean and you will be heading in the right direction.
Early on in the hike, you will notice ancient structures, some are heiau (temples) that were dedicated to fishing. Please be respectful and stay off of any ancient sites. Finally, once you arrive at Green Sand Beach you can climb down a steep sloped sandy trail that has been carved out over time through the cinder cones. On the north side, there are small caves to explore, or if you are daring and up for a swim you can jump on in the Pacific.
Take A Pit Stop to Cliff Jump
Furthermore, before visiting Green Sand Beach you will come across the best cliff-jumping spot on the Big Island. Although, I highly recommend going before your hike to the Green Sand Beach since the water is typically calmer earlier in the day, and after your hike, you will be exhausted South Point cliff jumping is not for the faint of heart! The jump is about 60 feet. A few minutes down South Point Rd. you will see the cliffs and a few cars parked on the side of the road. You will see a big wooden structure, probably some locals fishing, and a ladder going into the ocean (this is how you get back up). Finally, once you’ve found this you’re in the right spot. Jump in you dare!
Best Food Nearby
After a day of adventuring your appetite will be ravishing! Naahleu is the small town nearby that you will pass through on your way back. Right off South Point Rd. you will come across Paradise Meadows Orchard and Bee Farm. This is going to be your closest stop for a real restroom and cold drinks! This is also a great spot to get some souvenirs to take home! They have Kona Coffee, Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts, and Local Honey. Yet, you’re not going to get a full meal here.
On the Corner where South Point Rd meets Highway 11, you will find Big Dogs Hot Dogs a takeaway hotdog stand. They are open until 5 pm most days. Here you will get more than just your regular hot dog. They have Kielbasa, Portuguese Sausage, Pineapple Sausage, and Veggie Dogs!
However, if you are looking for a sit-down place to relax in Ocean View you’ll find Ka Lae Garden Thai Food. It’s a locally owned family business with delicious Thai. The last call for food is at 5:30 and they are closed Fridays and Saturdays.
What To Pack For Your Hike
- Quick Dry Towel (you’ll want this if you are going to swim) (plus it will give you coverage to change out of your bathing suit… not fun hiking back in wet clothes) Here’s a link to the one I have & love.
- Waterproof bag to put your wet bathing suit in. This one is great for travel!
- Water Bottle, I love the collapsible ones. They will save you space in your backpack. I recommend this one! Having a clip is great to attach to the outside of your bag for quick access. I also always have this with me at the airport.
- Reef Safe Sunscreen. This can come out super white sometimes so I prefer to get a tinted one. This is my go-to for my face! I recommend this one for your body.
- Light Snacks like nuts or dried fruit.
- Sunglasses, don’t forget your sunglasses!
